In addition to bus passes, the scholarship also pays for incentives such as leadership meetings for culinary students and state competitions for nursing students as well as supplies not provided by the school system, such as tools for automotive students and software for web design students. But eliminating those fees for Bowers-Whitley students means reducing barriers that can make the difference between pursuing post-secondary education – or not.
The Eckerd Family Foundation is proud to continue supporting Project SUCCESS at Bowers-Whitley because of its impressive outcomes. After one year, 85 percent of Bowers-Whitley students graduate, compared to 67 percent of students at other career centers. Half of Bowers-Whitley graduates are employed, and 45 percent are pursuing further education. The Hillsborough Education Foundation also has recruited additional donors for Project SUCCESS and hopes to expand to other career centers. Project SUCCESS has set the mark for effectively using scholarships to foster learning in at-risk communities.
