Awarded: $50,000

Challenge grant for capital funds for construction of facility containing eight transitional-housing units for pregnant or recently delivered mothers, infants and siblings. Program provides transitional services including education, counseling, parent-skills training, as well as vocational and spiritual support. Goals are for the mother to be self-supporting and provide a nurturing environment for her children.

Caring for Children, Inc. | Asheville, North Carolina
Awarded: $90,000

Providing funds over a three-year period to support Angels Watch, which offers short-term private care for children of families in crisis lacking adequate support networks. Program goals are to prevent unnecessary placement of children into state custody and to reduce family stress. Program includes referral to needed community services and resources as well as mentoring.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, EDUCATION & EMPLOYMENT:

Creative Grandparenting, Inc. (CGI) | Wilmington, Delaware
Awarded: $80,000

Supporting the development of the Northwest Creative Community Builders, an independent, self-sufficient organization for advancing education and community development. First year focus is on the urgent need for mentoring by community volunteers as a means to encourage whole child development. CGI will recruit, screen, train and place mentors in after-school programs to work with children on a one-to-one basis.

CFlorida Community Partnership Center
Awarded: $60,000

Developing a collaborative relationship among neighborhood youth service organizations, the public school system and middle school students utilizing the best practices of GEAR UP, a program encompassing a variety of services for at-risk children including career counseling, student leadership skills, cultural enrichment and other after-school activities. Emphasizes parental and community involvement as integral parts of the plan to be developed for school in North Greenwood community.

YWCA of Asheville | Asheville, North Carolina

Awarded: $100,000

Challenge grant for matching capital funds renovating and expanding YWCA facilities to include youth services. Goals include providing quality educational experiences, focusing especially on women and children; early childcare for multicultural infants and toddlers; engaging girls in community service; hands on exposure to science, math and technology projects; and programs addressing adolescent pregnancy prevention, social and health needs, workshop and advocacy events.
EARLY CHILD CARE:

Community Pride Child Care, Inc. | Clearwater, Florida
Awarded: $125,000

Conditional award of capital funds pending submission of a campaign plan for construction of a fourth day care center and the equipment needed to serve at-risk children, two months to six years of age, from low-income families and those living in homeless or domestic violence shelters. Program works to develop the child’s individual interests and abilities through art, literature, music, dramatic play, science, premath and reading readiness.

Family Center of Tampa Bay; Nova Southeastern University | Tampa, Florida
Awarded: $36,850

Providing a planning grant for a demonstration childcare center and related education programs to assist teachers and parents observe, identify and advocate for high quality child care.

Peace Memorial Child Development Center | Clearwater, Florida
Awarded: $40,000

Funding a nationally accredited day care learning center for children, 2 to 5 years old, of low-income working parents. The center seeks to stabilize operating funds and build capacity in this program recognized for outstanding performance, extensive volunteer involvement and a favorable teacher/child ratio. A two-part grant which includes direct program support and a $10,000 challenge to the center’s Board of Directors. This award follows a previous capacity grant to assist the board in developing a strategic funding plan.
EDUCATION:

Academy Prep Center for Education
Awarded: $1,250,000

A challenge grant supporting the endowment fund for the girls’ school addition to the Academy Prep program, thus fostering superior education opportunities for both boys and girls and enabling this model program to plan future expansion into other geographic areas to serve at-risk children.

African American Leadership Council | Clearwater, Florida
Awarded: $75,000

Expanding computer lab and acquiring appropriate educational software consistent with that used by the local school system. A structured, after-school program, which includes appropriate teaching support and targets middle school-aged children.

Citizens Alliance For Progress (CAP) | Tarpon Springs, Florida
Awarded: $110,000

Creating a community-based resource for at-risk students and families, to fill a gap between them and the school system, to link with community resources and to assist and engage parents. The resources will also maximize effective utilization of existing school and social services for students and families. Grant will fund staff positions to assist parents in working with the school system to enhance student performance and create education/ employment plans for participants. Staff will also identify other resources needed by families such as counseling and parenting skills as well as provide links to all social services available. The grant also supports after-school education and a portion of the award is dedicated to preprogram planning and evaluation criteria. Funding is provided for one and one-half years.

Communities In Schools of Asheville | Asheville, North Carolina
Awarded: $100,000

Funding a collaborative program bringing additional resources to children at-risk of not graduating from high school. A multi-year program providing counseling, guidance, parental counseling, educational enhancements and home visits, where appropriate. A partnership of parents, teachers, students and community resources designed to organize the assets needed for children to successfully complete high school.

East Coast Zoological Society of Florida, Inc. | Melbourne, Florida
Awarded: $500,000

Awarding matching funds for the construction of three zoo school classrooms enhancing the collaboration between the Brevard Zoo and the Brevard County Public Schools, creating additional educational opportunities for at-risk children and facilitating support of an endowment component for at-risk children to attend summer programs. This accredited education and conservation-based facility provides a classroom setting for standard fifth grade classes with additional learning opportunities encompassing a wide array of fields ranging from conservation and botany to finance and business. Outcome measurements include grades, study habits, behavior, self-respect and attitude.

Homeless Emergency Project | Clearwater, Florida
Awarded: $194,635

A three-year grant to a homeless shelter funding the “KEY (Keep Encouraging Youth) to Succeed Program,” which includes child advocacy, tutoring, counseling, coordination of social services, after-school and summer camp programs for children, 6 to 17 years old. Grant includes funds designated for educational supplies and equipment for the classroom facility. The award also requires the organization to develop appropriate evaluation criteria.

Metropolitan Ministries | Tampa, Florida
Awarded: $100,000

Supporting Metropolitan Ministries Academy, the first of its kind kindergarten through fifth grade charter school, in an inner-city homeless shelter serving children of the families housed at the facility. The shelter school successfully addresses many problems including the social issues encountered by the children when attending public schools and aides in the continuity of treatment to stabilize and rebuild the family.

Performing Arts Center and Theater, Inc. (PACT, Inc.) | Clearwater, Florida
Awarded: $50,000

Funding pilot, long-term project targeting elementary and middle schools in a five-county area that work with underprivileged and underserved youth bringing arts into the curriculum. Following a needs assessment, project objectives include accessibility issues; curriculum enhancement; and impact on students’ behavior, knowledge, and skills. An independent arts education evaluator will be utilized to evaluate program outcomes.
PLANNING, CAPACITY AND NONPROFIT SUPPORT:

Community Foundation of Tampa Bay; Denali Initiative | Tampa, Florida
Awarded: $75,000

Supporting a national program developed by Bill Strickland of the Manchester Craftmen’s Guild and the Bidwell Training Center, a Genius Award recipient of the McArthur Foundation. The award supports the Venture Investment Fund through which Steppin’ Stone Farm, the Denali selection, will develop a project over a three-year period. Steppin’ Stone Farm operates a residential program for at-risk teenage girls. The Denali Initiative trains to develop entrepreneurial skills enabling the organization to expand and work toward self-sufficiency by developing a for-profit project. Training will also enable this leader to return to the community to create a framework for networking, peer support and developing a social vision among many not-for-profit agencies serving the local community. This is collaborative effort with the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation to support the growth and development of local not-for-profits.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT:

Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County | Bradenton, Florida
Awarded: $79,000

Establishing teen center for 13-18 year-old youth in club serving low-income neighborhood. The teen center will provide a safe, productive and nurturing gathering place for after school and summers. Program includes activities addressing employability skills, leadership development, exploration of the arts, sports, special events, recreation and trips. Grant also includes funding for three buses to meet transportation needs.

Crosswinds Youth Services | Merritt Island, Florida
Awarded: $100,000

Providing a challenge grant for a capital project to build a new and expanded runaway and youth crisis shelter for a long-established program offering a multitude of services to at-risk children. Goals include providing workable solutions for youths’ problems, reuniting youth with families when possible, helping resolve conflicts, strengthening family relationships and empowering youth to make positive decisions.

Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA
Awarded: $100,000

Providing matching funds to continue the operation of three Success Center locations, initially funded by the foundation in June 1998. This second year funding will also facilitate continued program expansion and the development of statistically valid outcome data to aid program evaluation and replication in other communities.
