Jack Eckerd founded Eckerd Drugs in Florida. Starting with three drugstores in Tampa, Eckerd popularized self-service drugstores, growing the business into one of the nation's most successful chains and introducing such features as senior citizen discounts and 2-for-1 photo processing. He recognized and valued the contributions of all employees to the company's success and developed innovative methods of compensation for which all were eligible.
Throughout their lives, Ruth and Jack Eckerd set aside time for family and community and anonymously supported many nonprofit organizations. The Eckerds firmly believed it was the obligation of everyone to contribute to their community and especially those who were capable of filling leadership roles.
They were personally involved with many civic organizations. In 1972, Florida Presbyterian College was renamed Eckerd College in recognition of the family's commitment to liberal arts education and community service. Their support of community and the arts is embodied in Ruth Eckerd Hall, the center for the performing arts in Pinellas County.
The commitment of Jack and Ruth Eckerd to youth began over four decades ago. In 1968 they founded Eckerd Youth Alternatives, opening a single therapeutic wilderness camp for troubled youth in Brooksville, Florida.
Currently, Eckerd Youth Alternatives cares for approximately 9,000 children and youth annually, including residential programs for behavioral and adjudicated young people, aftercare/reentry programs and, more recently, prevention programs. (See: www.eckerd.org)
Eckerd Youth Alternatives is a distinct, separate entity and not affiliated with or supported by the Eckerd Family Foundation.
Although Ruth and Jack Eckerd have passed away, their legacy of leadership by example guides us. The Eckerd Family Foundation upholds their spirit of philanthropy by investing in youth and families, encouraging youth leadership, supporting the journey into young adulthood and pursuit of educational and vocational opportunities.
The Board of Directors, comprised of the Eckerd family, seeks to honor and follow the examples set by the founders as the foundation closes its activities in the remaining years of its life. The foundation plans to fully invest its assets within the next decade.
