The Juvenile Justice Center at Barry University Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law in Orlando, recently held its first bi-annual statewide training session for juvenile lawyers across Florida. The Center, created last year after an alarming report about Florida’s juvenile justice system, aims to better train law students, public defenders and private attorneys to more ably defend children in the state’s juvenile courts system.

Boy Scouts of America, Gulf Ridge Council

The Eckerd Family Foundation has funded a new, innovative youth diversion effort in Hillsborough County to help first-time, non-violent offenders learn responsibility, build their confidence and keep their records clear. Based on the Boy Scouts “Venturing” program, the Juveniles Achieving Knowledge and Experience (J.A.K.E.) program combines a series of structured meetings, community volunteer service, and an outdoor team-building exercise to turn young lives around.
